Ever snapped at a co-worker in a meeting that cuts into lunch? Or considered violently flipping your table while you wait for caesar salad at a restaurant? Us too...
While people joke about being hangry (a linguistic combo of "hungry" and "angry"), new research confirms that hunger-induced anger (hanger) is real!
Professor Viren Swami of Anglia Ruskin University in the UK and his colleagues set out to investigate if hanger is a legit phenomenon by asking 64 adult volunteers to record their levels of hunger and emotional states in a smartphone app five times a day for 21 days.
They found a clear link between self-reported hunger and emotions such as irritability and anger. While other studies have also suggested that hanger exists, this is the first one to look at the phenomenon in a real-world setting instead of a lab.
Possible explanations for hanger include low blood sugar, increased stress hormones, and having a more negative outlook when hungry.
Bottom line? Always have snacks on stand-by! 🍫 👀
